You’ve probably seen this photograph of Willie Mays’ back-to-the-infield catch from the 1954 World Series many times, but always in black and white.
Seeing it colorized by artist John Turney reminds me of how far we’ve come with the technology for these effects. If you’re old enough to remember when Ted Turner considered colorizing “Citizen Kane,” you’re aware of the tug-of-war between advocates for black-and-white and for color. I’m OK with a colorized picture, tv show or film, as long as I know it’s a “version” of the original, and not being put forward as anything else. With that said, some artists have done cool things with old sports photographs, breathing new life into them.
